Many homes in the Ulster countryside of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were more than just places to live. They also provided the workshop accommodation for the cottage industries through which families earned their livelihood. The Weaver's Cottage is a typical example of these dual-purpose dwellings.
In such houses a room was laid aside for a handloom which was used to weave linen or tweed. More prosperous families often had more than one loom and employed craftsmen to work on their behalf. Spinning was also carried out in the weaver's house. You will find costumed interpreters who will explain the process and demonstrate the use of natural materials for dyeing.
