EMIGRANTS AND THE WHITE STAR LINE: CROSSING THE WIDE ATLANTIC
[New temporary exhibition]
A unique opportunity to find out more about the experiences of emigrants on board the steamships and great ocean liners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Objects on display include 1st and 3rd class table settings, a variety of luncheon menus, ships bells, a Titanic memorial plaque, postcards and luggage labels.

A special programme for schools is available from 17th November 2008 to 30th April 2009 (max 30 pupils, min. age 10 years)

FROM LEADERS TO EXILES - THE FLIGHT OF THE EARLS
[New temporary exhibition ends 30th January 2009]

Drama workshops
Wednesday 22nd- Monday 27th October 2008
(max 30 pupils, age 9-11 years)
Led by Taryn Gleeson and Joe Brennan, the sessions include a storytelling session, a short trail, costumes and a drama workshop lasting in total 80 minutes.
Admission to this workshop is free. Please book by 30th September 2008.

HALLOWE'EN/ PENNSYLVANIA HARVEST HOME
[Wednesday 15th to Friday 24th October 2008]

The festivals of Hallowe'en in Ulster and Harvest Home in Pennsylvania marked the end of the summer and the beginning of the dark days of winter. They were times of great merriment and excitement for young and old - large quantities of food were consumed, ghostly pranks were played on the neighbours, young couples were 'matched' in bizarre fireside games and children took part in a variety of amusements. These old customs have are revived annually for visiting school children in late October. It is one of our most popular events, so please book early.

IMMIGRANT VOICES
Tuesday November 18th, and Wednesday November 26th, 2008.
(max. 60 pupils, 11-13 years.)

This programme has been specially prepared to highlight the varied challenges and opportunities of settling in a new place and to encourage empathy with recent arrivals to this country. It explores the experiences of the 19th century immigrant to America through the dramatised stories of individuals who settled in urban and rural areas. Issues of diversity, inclusion, failure and success are highlighted. Please book by 30th October, 2008.

CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY
Tuesday 2nd to Thursday 4th December 2008
Come and celebrate Christmas through a week of early 19th century activities in the authentic surroundings of our Ulster and American houses. Join an Ulster family as they prepare for the festive season; find out about mummers and their straw masks; take part in traditional party games; learn how Americans decorated their Christmas tree using natural materials; sample unusual Christmas foods; and hear about the origins of some of our Christmas customs.

HAWTHORN DAYS AND WILDFLOWER WAYS
Tuesday 3rd to Thursday 5th February 2009
Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th March 2009
(max. 100 pupils, 10-12 years)

Is your class reading 'Under the Hawthorn Tree' or 'Wildflower Girl'? Then live out the experience in authentic 19th century surroundings at the Folk Park.

Discover Mary Kate Conway's secret cures; taste famine foods such as yellow meal gruel and soup; visit the land agent's house. travel on the emigrant ship; watch out for tricksters and pickpockets and find out what's cooking in America.

FLIGHT FROM FAMINE: RESIDENTIAL
(
max. 32 pupils, age 10-11 years)

Monday 23rd to Friday 27th March 2009
Day 1: 11.00 am-4.15 pm
Based in the exhibit buildings of the Folk Park each pupil adopts the role of an emigrant in Famine times, participating in a variety of practical tasks and making decisions about their future.
Day 2: Beginning at 10.00 am.
Pupils examine other perspectives on Famine emigration such as the landowners, shipping companies and government. The topic is approached through problem solving, practical tasks and activity sheets.
Programme charge for 2 full days: £11 in total.
Residential centre: evening meal, B&B and lunch, £23.50 per pupil
(One free teacher place per eight pupils)
